Who was this Horace dude and why did he exhort the population to make money at all cost? His real name was Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BC), well known Roman lyrical poet – very wise but sometimes a tad cynical. Nevertheless, some two thousand years later Bertholt Brecht put the same thought even more succinctly: Food first, then morals.
Another thing Horace opined back in BC: ‘We are just statistics, born to consume resources’.
That said, it is nice to consume the right stuff, languishing in the right restaurant after having alighted from our gleaming SUV. But to be able to consume the right ‘resources’ in the right setting and the right company we have to make money first – hence the above wisdom.
His original lines, written in BC Latin, sounded all Greek! Hail to those who translated them into English! (As a matter of fact, I have a suspicion it was translated into Greek first, then into Arabic and only then into English.) But I digress.
And so, what else did the man say? Glad you asked! Horace also cautioned: ‘To have begun is half the job: be bold and be sensible’.
And that’s where the rub lies – kicking off on some cool venture is all too easy, to be bold and bash our heads against a brick wall is what most of us do all the time – after having scoffed at thoughtful calls to be sensible!
Most of us tend to think: kicking off boldly surely adds up to the entire sensible thing – Horace didn’t have to nag people to be ever so sensible. Bold, yes; sensible, no – too nerdy sounding. But then – we console ourselves – maybe he intended that part merely for those slow Romans way back in BC. After all, he couldn’t have suspected there’d be so many cool dudes – us – two thousand plus years hence!
I have to caution though: to start off in the right direction most of us are sorely in need of sensible guidance – especially beginners aiming to make money on the vast Internet, overrun as it is with scammers and worse: rules, regulations and last, but not least, the scourge of the Internet: cyber snoopers lurking all over the Net!
I shudder to think what a lyrical poet like Horace might have opined regarding today’s Big Brotherly cyber snoopers – and in the ancient Latin vernacular to boot!
So then – if a well known poet from back before the Present Era exhorted his fellow Romans to be sensible and make money, we’d better take note. Moreover and unbeknown to Horace, a new global innovation – the Internet – provides us with just the right tools to make money – if we are prepared to follow sensible guidance step for step.
So far so good you might say, but, where do we find sensible guidance applicable to the age in which we live? I am dying to give you the good news: there is at least one well proven, honest way, working from your own home, where no one, not even your teenage children, need to disparage your first hesitating steps. I suggest, if you want to work in peace, pretend you’re a compulsive web browser.
- And so, do not procrastinate, be bold, be sensible and make like Horace!
